Symposium - Automating Democracy: Generative Artificial Intelligence, Journalism, and the Future of Democracy

Sophisticated AI systems are increasingly everywhere, including in the news and the media—institutions that are vital for democracy. Up until now, we could take for granted humans’ central role in shaping democratic deliberation and culture through the same. But what does it mean for the future of democracy, if humans are increasingly sidelined by AI? How can we protect democratic values, like public deliberation and self-governance, in societies which stand to be significantly reshaped through AI? And how might these new technologies be used to promote democratic values? This symposium aims to discuss these questions with a set of interdisciplinary experts.

This event is generously funded by the Balliol Interdisciplinary Institute and supported by the Institute for Ethics in AI. This Symposium will comprise of three panel discussions:

1.   The Technology of Large Language Models, featuring: Hal Hodson (The Economist), Hannah Kirk (Oxford Internet Institute), Saffron Huang (Collective Intelligence Project)

2.   Generative AI’s Impact on News and Media, featuring: Laura Ellis (BBC), Gary Rogers (Fathm), Gemma Newlands (Oxford Internet Institute)

3.   Generative AI and the Future of Democracy, featuring: Prof Hélène Landemore (Yale University), Prof John Tasioulas (Institute for Ethics in AI), Polly Curtis (Demos)
