Who we are...

The Institute for Ethics in AI brings together world-leading philosophers and other experts in the humanities with the technical developers and users of AI in academia, business and government. The ethics and governance of AI is an exceptionally vibrant area of research at the University of Oxford and the Institute is an opportunity to take a bold leap forward from this platform.

In 2021, the Institute for Ethics in AI was formally launched following a donation from Stephen A. Schwarzman in 2019, with the aim of creating a dynamic, interconnected research institute. Researchers at the
Institute are leading efforts to embed ethical considerations at the earliest stages of technological development, collaborating with technologists, industry partners and governments to codevelop AI technologies
that are ethical by design.

The Institute’s focus and expertise continue to expand, and we are committed to exploring new fields of research as opportunities emerge.

Information about our core of research themes can be found here

The Institute is part of the Philosophy Faculty and is housed in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at the University of Oxford.
