Institute for Ethics in AI

Schwarzman Centre

Welcome

The Institute for Ethics in AI brings together world-leading thinkers from across philosophy, the humanities and STEM with leaders in tech, business, government and civil society. Driven by the latest research, our mission is to offer independent and informed perspectives on AI ethics, thereby shaping innovation and enhancing global public debate.

With its headquarters in the University of Oxford’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, the Institute is part of the Philosophy Faculty. Firmly grounded in philosophy yet working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative way, the Institute exemplifies the vibrancy of the ethics and governance of AI as an area of research at Oxford. The Institute also supports new initiatives driving innovation in AI ethics, including the Accelerator Fellowship Programme and HAI Lab.

Our multidisciplinary research team focuses on a carefully chosen range of ethical problems arising from recent step-changes in AI-driven technologies, from the downstream social and ethical implications of AI and how to address them to the upstream challenges of building AI that reflects human needs and values to fundamental questions about machines and humanity.

Our Advisory Council includes internationally distinguished figures from academia, business, government and the third sector.

Events

Critical to the Institute’s mission is fostering many-sided discussion. Our events programme convenes academics, technologists and representatives of government, civil society and the private sector to discuss the ethics of AI, both in person and online.

Our AI Ethics lunchtime seminars and Expert Insight series are public events, so anybody can attend, ask questions and express their view.
