Dr Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green, Director of Research at the Institute has published a new article in The Lancet Healthy Longevity (February 2026). Her co-authors are Tyler Reinmund, Professor Kate Hamblin and Professor Samir K Sinha.
The paper, “Responsible use of AI in the provision of long-term care for older people: a care-centric approach,” challenges dominant narratives that frame AI primarily as a solution to workforce shortages and efficiency pressures in long-term care.
While automation may offer benefits, the authors argue that narrow problem-solving approaches risk overlooking the ethical and relational complexities of care systems, potentially compromising care quality.
Instead, the article advances a care-centric framework grounded in co-production and human rights, and proposes a definition of responsible AI in long-term care to guide future policy and practice.
