Abstract
In this talk, I present and build on the central line of argument defended in my recent monograph, Empowering Workers in an Age of Automation, clarifying how labour market policymakers should respond to the emerging threats and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence. More substantively, I argue for a human-centred approach that emphasizes the ways in which workers can benefit from the availability of artificial intelligence, but that assigns governments a pivotal role in securing this outcome. The resulting account is sensitive to the empirical reality, cautions against sensationalist narratives, and suggests an exciting interdisciplinary research agenda that demands that we integrate philosophical insights with findings from across the humanities and social sciences.
